Expanded options for the 2022/23 season

We introduced our Chilli dips series at the end of 2021 and it proved popular, so we’re back again! This time we have Kent and Surrey editions and we hope to visit several locations.

I’m excited to introduce the fabulous Jude Palmer from Run Surrey Hills to the team for the Surrey edition. She’s an exceptional open water coach, and if you’re into running, you should definitely get to know her. Take a look at her film here and you’ll realise how lucky we are for her to be working with us.

We’re about training channel swimmers, so why a Chilli Dip series?

One of the apprehensions that some swimmers have is how they are going to handle cold water. By arranging monthly dips as the water cools down and starts to warm again, the you’ll already know that you can handle the conditions when training starts.

Consider it a psychological dip.

We also acknowledge that cold water is great for mental health. As is getting together with like minded people and staying connected with the group over the winter.

We’ll teach you the extra skills and tips needed for winter water and our Surrey series we will give you the extra skills and tips needed for river swimming.

What’s involved?

This isn’t training. It is a social dip. If you literally want to get in and out that is fine with us. If you want to swim a little longer, that’s fine too. We will cap the duration based on the water temperature and conditions.

We’re not going to be facilitating long & heroic cold swims.

You should limit your swims to your ability, erring on the side of caution.

What can you wear?

Basically anything you want. If you want to wear a wetsuit or gloves & socks then that’s cool with us. You can wear multiple hats if you want. If you want to do head up breaststroke with a bobble hat, that is fine too, we do ask that everyone wears a swimming cap though.

You can wear any hat colour.

Bring a tow float if you have one.

New swimmers to arrive 15 minutes in advance to attend a cold water swimming briefing. All swimmers to attend the session specific safety briefing prior to the start of the session.

If we have a large group, we will split into two smaller groups and stagger the swim. This is to ensure sufficient safety cover.

Surrey edition

What else?

All swimmers will need to have signed the disclaimer. This is only required once for the winter season.

If we have a particularly cold snap, we reserve the right to restrict the sessions to known swimmers for the Kent edition.

SUGGESTED KIT LIST

Clothing

As we progress through the colder months of the years, you’ll need to dress appropriately. Come ready to dress for a blizzard. If you don’t need all your layers, happy days. If you wait until you realise that you needed them then it’s a little too late.

Layers are best and you’ll want more layers as the water & air temperature decreases. Consider the following:

  • Base layers (multiple in colder months). We’ve found merino wool is easy to slip on

  • Tracksuit trousers

  • T-shirt

  • Hoodie

  • Warm jacket / DryRobe or equivalent

  • Woolly hat

  • Warm socks

  • Gloves

If you’ve ever watched Cool Runnings, Sanka shows how to dress quickly (really important). Be like Sanka!

Warm drink

A warm drink for after your dip

Swim kit

  • Normal swim kit (swimming costume, hat & goggles)

  • Earplugs will make a massive difference to how you perceive the temperature

  • Towel that you can change under

  • Crocs or similar (avoid flip flops)

  • If you want to wear extra layers in the water - feel free.

  • Bring a tow float if you have one.
